What Curtains For Traverse Rods – Our Top Picks

Curtains aren’t just for privacy. These window coverings are an easy way to add a color palette and pattern to your interior. Whether you choose short curtains or floor-to-ceiling ones, it is important to decide how you’ll be hanging these drapes.

One common method of hanging curtains is by a traverse rod system. If you’ve never heard of traverse rods, here we will explain more about it plus show you some of the best curtains to use with a traverse rod.

What is a Traverse Rod?

Traverse rod systems either have ringlets or clips that move along a slot or track in the rod. The style of hanging curtains on these rod systems is also called Pinch Pleat. The ringlets have a small opening for the drape pins and run evenly depending on the number of rings attached. A cord is also attached to the master pulley and runs through the traverse rod. This cord extends beyond the rod for easy opening and closing of the curtain.

Most traverse rods allow the curtains to open from the middle of the rod, with each half moving equally until both are fully open. However, all traverse rods are adjustable so they can pull from right to left, one side only or left to right.

There are also custom curtains that are specially made for traverse rod systems. These draperies often come with sewn-in pins or hooks so you’ll need to buy the pins along with the traverse rod.

Are Traverse Rods Still in Style?

While it’s true that traverse rod curtains can be difficult to find in stores, it doesn’t mean they are no longer in style. This timeless curtain style is always in high demand, although it tends to be more expensive than other rod-free alternatives.

If you are redecorating your home and want to add a touch of class to your interiors, traverse rod curtains are the way to go. There are many decorative rods in modern and classic style sold online so you’ll be spoiled for choice!

When Should You Use Traverse Rods?

If you’re not sure when to use traverse rods for hanging your curtains, read through the following pointers:

  • If you are looking for functional curtain tyes that you can easily and frequently open and close, then traverse rods make an excellent choice. With regular rods, you have to open and close the drapes with your hands, which can be a little awkward and even cause damage to the fabric. With traverse curtain rods, on the other hand, a simple cord allows you to open and close the drapes as many times as you like without causing wear and tear.
  • For windows that are wider than 36 inches, traverse rods make a good option as they have a longer support bracket. These systems are also ideal for French windows and patio doors with large openings.
  • Rather than hanging multiple rods on the same window, why not go for a double traverse rod instead? This option prevents the window dressing from looking bulky.

How to Hang Curtains on a Traverse Rod in 9 Steps

Step 1: insert a pin on the back of the curtain in the center of each pleat before sliding the straight end of the fabric into the pleat. Make sure the hook end is left facing outward with its curving facing downward.

Step 2: now insert the curtain pin on the back of the fabric’s end.

Step 3: start the overlap mechanism by holding one drapery panel and overlapping the side over. Hook the first pin into the overlap carrier from the back. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions that come with the traverse or pinch pleat curtain on how to master the overlap carrier.

Step 4: now it’s time to slide the second pin into the fabric’s front arm.

Step 5: once you’ve completed all the pin sliding, leave the last two as they must be pushed into the rod’s end.

Step 6: next, slide the last pins into the rod’s hole and into the bracket.

Step 7: repeat steps 3-6 with the second panel if you’ve chosen a double traverse rod.

Step 8: open the curtain completely and make a single vertical crease using your thumb and forefinger. Now open and close the curtain a few times in order to check whether the crease returns every time the curtain opens.

Step 9: starting from the top of the drape down, create a stylish wave in the crape by pulling the fabric forward while pushing the pleat backward in between.
